What we see, place by place

Same red clay, different houses.

Simpsonville, Mauldin & Fountain Inn

The Golden Strip grew in waves. Subdivisions from the 1980s and 1990s are where gray polybutylene and aging CPVC turn up; the newer neighborhoods toward Five Forks and Fountain Inn are mostly slab-built and plumbed in PEX. City water here is soft, mountain-fed Greenville Water.

Greenville, Taylors & Greer

Older Greenville neighborhoods and former mill villages sit on crawl spaces, some with galvanized water lines and cast-iron drains still in service, and big trees over old sewer laterals. Greer runs its own utility, Greer CPW.

Spartanburg, Easley & Anderson

Each has its own water system, and outside the city limits many homes are on septic tanks and private wells. Well water varies from one property to the next and is worth testing before any treatment is chosen.

Utilities worth knowing

Who to call for what.

  • WaterGreenville Water serves Simpsonville, Mauldin and most of Greenville County. Greer CPW, Easley Combined Utilities and Spartanburg Water serve their own cities.
  • SewerReWa treats the wastewater; the pipes in the street belong to your city or sewer district. The line from your house to the main is yours.
  • Natural gasIf you smell gas, leave the building and call your gas utility’s emergency line or 911 from outside.
  • Before diggingCall 811 (South Carolina 811) to have buried utility lines marked.
